  • Medical and specific scopes
The focus of the diagnostic activities at the Department of Neuropathology is the evaluation of bioptic tissue specimens from the central and peripheral nervous system, covering the microscopic and molecular examination of a wide range of different types of tissues. Research activities comprise projects in the area of clinical research as well as basic science. Clinical and scientific work is being carried out in close collaboration with collegues from the Departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and other medical specialties within the Neurocenter and from other institutions.

  • Diagnostic procedures

Diagnostic Neuropathology comprises the entire spectrum of histopathological, ultrastructural, and molecular evaluation of tissues from the central and peripheral nervous system, including sceletal muscle. Methods commonly used and available in the Department of Neuropathology include:

- Histopathological Examination

- Additional Staining Methods and Tissue Processing including Immunohistochemistry

- Electron Microscopy

- Molecular Analyses

Projects


The Epilepsy group investigates the effects of long-lasting epilepsy on the hippocampal formation of the brain.

The Cytochrome P450 group analyses the effects of long-term therapy using neuroactive drugs like antiepileptics or neuroleptics in brain, especially in hippocampus and hypothalamus.

The Brain Tumor group investigates highly malignant tumors of the brain with special focus on their development of resistance against chemotherapeutic agents.
